A PRISONER, reportedly of unsound mind and on remand at the Camp Street Prison on Sunday afternoon scaled the facility’s fence, but was promptly caught within minutes, at Hadfield and Lime Streets, not far from the jail. He was identified as Ruco McIntire, 27, who is on remand for the larceny of a cell-phone, and is on $40,000 bail.
According to a prison source, the inmate seized the opportunity to escape while attending church at the prison’s chapel.
He at first pretended to wander outside the building unsupervised, and when he thought that the coast was clear, made a dash for the fence, scaling it in the vicinity of Bent and John Streets.
But unfortunately for him, he was seen making a break for it by an officer, and an alarm was raised.
Reports indicate that police from the Brickdam Station heard the alarm blaring at the prison and responded with mobile patrols, which was how he came to be nabbed by prison wardens at Hadfield and Lime Streets.
When contacted, Director of Prisons (Ag), Gladwin Samuels, said that while the incident is unfortunate, “I would like to commend the police and prison officers for their quick response which lead to his recapture.”
He said when an investigation into the matter is completed, that based on recommendations, the necessary charges will be instituted against the prisoner and the warden responsible for his supervision.
The escapee has since been placed in solitary confinement.
