AS motorists continue to resist the newly enforced parking meter system in Georgetown, a female student of the Bishops’ High School (BHS) had her vehicle clamped, while it was parked outside the school Thursday.The student’s vehicle, a Toyota Ist, was parked on Carmichael Street, just across the main entrance of her school when it was discovered clamped at approximately 09:30h.

A teacher of BHS, Coen Jackson, told the Guyana Chronicle that the student was made aware that she had to pay a fine of $9,280 to remove the clamp. She was escorted to City Hall by another teacher of the school, where she was informed that the area in which she was parked was “off-limits” and the agreement ratified between Smart City Solutions and the Guyana Teachers’ Union (GTU) only exempted teachers from the parking meter system.

After discussions with the officials, it was agreed that the student will not pay the fine but was let off with a warning to not repeat this incident. Teacher Jackson asserted that there are not enough parking spaces on one side of the street to accommodate both students and teachers and posited that in more “advanced” countries, there are no parking meters in front of schools.
