PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad (CMC) – English Premiership legend Sol Campbell has joined Trinidad and Tobago men’s senior team as assistant coach.
His appointment follows that of former T&T defender, Dennis Lawrence, who was named as head coach by the T&T Football Association two weeks ago.

Campbell ended his playing career five years ago and the new appointment represents his first taste of football management following the completion of his coaching badges.
“Dennis has been given the opportunity to choose his own staff,” TTFA president, David John-Williams said Monday at a media conference.

“Over the last couple of days he had recommended somebody whom he would like to be his assistant. He is a UEFA pro-licensed coach; he is a legend in the game in the English Premiership. He was part of the Arsenal invincibles and that person is Sol Campbell.
“I have been able to secure his signature … so he’s signed and onboard.”

Campbell became a cult hero at Arsenal between 2001 and 2006, playing alongside the likes of Thierry Henry, Dennis Bergkamp and Patrick Vieira in a golden period for the club.
The 42-year-old, who also played 73 times for England and turned out in three World Cups, said he was looking forward to the experience.

“It will be challenging but I’m ready to roll up my sleeves to help out,” Campbell was quoted as saying.
T&T are currently struggling in World Cup qualifying where they sit one from bottom of the table of the six-nation CONCACAF final round without a point. They are preparing to face Panama and Mexico in their next qualifiers in March.
