Port Kaituma man charged with stabbing step-brother

…over $5,000 bill

A 37-year-old man was remanded to prison on Tuesday by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan for allegedly wounding his step-brother over a $5,000 electrical bill.
Warner Welcome, a Port Kaituma shopkeeper, is charged with unlawfully and maliciously wounding Steven Benn with intent to main, disfigure or cause grievous bodily harm, on January 15, 2017 at Port Kaituma Water Front.

The unrepresented man pleaded not guilty to the charge. According to the police allegations, the two are step brothers and on the day in question, Benn approached Welcome about the payment of the Guyana Power & Light bill, which amounted to $5,000.
According to the allegations, Welcome, who was under the influence of alcohol at the time, broke a glass mug and stabbed his step brother to his neck. The man was rushed to the hospital.

Police Prosecutor Deniro Jones objected to bail on the grounds that the victim is still in a critical condition at the hospital. Bail was denied and Welcome was remanded until February 7, 2017. The matter was transferred to the Matthew’s Ridge Magistrate’s Court.
