… Squad in strength and conditioning phase

GUYANA’S green machine must up their style of play if it is to match with the best in the Rugby world when they head to the Cathay Pacific/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens series, according to head coach Kenneth Grant-Stuart. Stuart, in an invited comment said that the National side, who were hampered over the December period due to weather, will need to pick up if they are to take the game to their opponents.
“What I’ve encountered in December in Trinidad and Tobago, we realised that our game has to be more robust, more physical, going into Hong Kong because it’s a higher level of competition,” the head coach stated.
“The guys are aware of their requirements and I think everyone is mentally prepared. Just that we have to do the work now and get ourselves to that level.”
Another key factor heading to the April 7-9 event will be the physical stature of the Guyanese players.
Grant-Stuart stated, “We have other stuff that we are working with in terms of speed and mobility and the fitness that we are trying to take into this Hong Kong game. We’re trying to take it so much higher; I don’t think size will be much to worry about.”
“Nevertheless we are still trying to get some robust men of good quality and size in the line-up. Hopefully we get Kevin McKenzie and Rupert Giles. One of the guys out here Rondel McArthur could match those body types,” the coach added.
Meanwhile the cohesiveness of the final team was also a question raised to the coach who contended that the amount of time the players spend together in training does not depent on him.
“It is for the union to put together the team earlier, bring all the players who have to come in early so we can have that togetherness. We are basically doing fitness. Mr Barrington Brown is taking them through mostly strength and conditioning.”
With training set for today, tomorrow, Thursday and Saturday, the shortlisted squad have just under three months to get themselves ready for their third chance in the spotlight among the big teams.
