…after taxi driver with suspended licence back behind the wheel

THE travelling public in Berbice has expressed outrage after 66-year-old Haroon Eshack, a taxi driver, was allegedly seen behind the wheel of a Route 50 minibus even though he has a pending court matter on a charge of causing death by dangerous driving.

Eshack’s licence was expected to be suspended pending the outcome of the case before the Mahaica Magistrates Court. In August this year, he was charged with causing the death of British-Guyanese Bibi O’Donovan, but it appears Eshaak has been ignoring the law.
On several occasions last week, persons in the Rosignol area reported that the 66-year-old man was driving a blue Route 50 minibus, plying the Rosignol- Georgetown route.
Pictures of the man operating a bus were subsequently posted on social media platform, Facebook and many who saw the pictures expressed surprise that the man is still behind the wheels of public transportation.

On August 19, Ishack was denied bail by Magistrate, Zamilla Ally-Seepaul at the Sparendaam Magistrates Court on a charge of causing death by dangerous driving. It is alleged that on August 17, Eshack drove his car, HC 6753 in a manner dangerous to the public, thereby causing British-Guyanese national Bibi O’Donovan’s demise along the Chelsea Public Road. He was not required to plead to the charge.

Reports are that the car that was being used by O’Donovan and daughter was heading to the Eugene F. Correia airport at Ogle for a 05:00hrs check-in when it slammed into the rear of a truck, GHH 7197, in the vicinity of the Mahaica Bridge. O’Donovan, 53, died on the spot, while her daughter, Shaneeza Lewis, 23, was hospitalised.
The magistrate learnt at the time that the man was previously involved in a fatal accident in Berbice in which three persons died as a result of the accident.
