Secret ballot could dethrone Chase-Green — Councillors

SOME City Councillors are of the view that a secret ballot for Thursday’s mayoral elections would result in current Deputy Mayor, Sherod Duncan, defeating City Mayor Patricia Chase-Green.“What we’re pressing for is a secret ballot. If there’s a secret ballot, Sherod would win. This (secret balloting) is not unheard of; it was even done in Linden,” a source told Guyana Chronicle on Monday.

If, however, there is a show of hands, most of the councillors would be “scared” to vote for anyone else besides current mayor, Patricia Chase-Green, the source explained.

“They (the councillors) would have already been told how to vote, but we truly need a breath of fresh air,” the source offered.

In a Facebook post earlier this month, Deputy Mayor Sherod Duncan said if he were elected Mayor of Georgetown, one of his first orders of business would be the cutting of wasteful spending.

“A cash-strapped City cannot afford luxury vehicles and gas guzzlers. I would continue to (ride my) cycle, which is easy on the environment, (introducing cycle lanes where practicable) and when absolutely necessary, use a modest, fuel efficient vehicle,” Duncan said in the post.

In another post, Duncan said he felt humbled that he had the full support of his party and constituency as he pursues the leadership of the municipality.

“President of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana, (His Excellency) David Arthur Granger, has set his Government’s vision for capital towns as engines for economic development of the regions of which they are the nucleus. I am of the view that Georgetown, as our national capital city of Guyana, needs more than any other municipality to realign itself away from what President Granger calls the compound mentality towards a capital mentality and economic mentality”, Duncan also said.

Duncan has said that he believes greater things are still to be done in this City, and he looks forward to continue engaging City residents and businesses.

  1. Secret ballot is surely the way to go in one of my blog I made this point that our political leaders and civil society should take a serious look at our constitution and make the necessary changes that would allow any representative to vote their conscience and not what the party says or feels. We urgently need transformational leaders all across Guyana. The same old way of business will not destroy the many cancerous behaviors that has continue to plague this nation.
So again secret ballot is the way to go as many of those councilors do not have what it takes to vote their conscious openly.
BEST OF LUCK DUNCAN you desire it !!!!!!
I recall Former Mayor and PM Green kissing our “Blue Eye Bousghie” and letting her know how much she desire being our President.

  2. you got fifteen or so people in the council common sense will tell the party who they voted for depending on the tally. all APNU got to do it to ask their party members who they voted for and if they lie, APNU will definitely know they have party people who cannot be trusted,
