SIMON Christopher Kendall, 11, of Number 46 Village, East Berbice, Corentyne, who is a first form student of Tagore Memorial School, on Thursday became the latest road fatality.

He was struck down on the Number 46 Public Road around 16:30 hrs while making his way to assist on the family’s farm a few houses away.

Kendal had returned from school a little earlier and was accompanying his 18- year older brother Sheldon Kendall to the farm, when motor car PVV 7617 struck him down on the northern shoulder of the Number 46 Public Road.

“Me been a ride me bicycle on the other side a de road and me see the car come full speed and knock down the boy, me halla pon am seh you knock down the pikney and a continue you nah stap but he drive way,” an eyewitness who gave his name as Deocharran said.

According to him, the car was heading east and failed to properly manoeuvre a turn into Number 46 Village allegedly due to the speed with which it was travelling, and in the process struck down the boy, who was walking in the corner of the road.

It narrowly missed Christopher’s brother Sheldon, who was by his side.

According to Deocharran, the driver after hitting the boy continued on his way home in Number 46 Village, a few houses away from the scene of the accident.

As people converged on the scene of the accident, the car returned a short while after from the opposite direction and stopped a few feet away from the body of the dead boy.

But the eyewitness related that the driver of the car was not the man who had hit down the boy, but his brother.

Police sources have confirmed that the alleged driver of the car is in hiding and his brother who returned the car to the scene is in police custody assisting with the investigation. The mother of Kendall, Monica Kendall, was inconsolable when this newspaper visited her home.

Christopher was described as a very willing, kind person and quiet lad.

He was a very active member of the Number 48 Full Gospel Church. He leaves to mourn his parents and older brother.
