Colwyn Harding and his alleged accomplice, Tyron Escource, 23, were on Wednesday remanded after pleading not guilty to a joint charge of robbery with violence before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.
Harding, 26 of Laing Avenue, Georgetown had once alleged that he was brutally raped with a police baton and otherwise assaulted by two police officers while in custody at the Timehri Police Station in 2013.
However this case was dismissed in March, 2016 by trial magistrate Leron Daly at the Providence Magistrate’s Court due to insufficient evidence.
Harding, along with Escource of West Ruimveldt is accused of robbing Jameel Williams on November 14, 2016 at Barr Street, Kitty of a $5,000 Samsung Cellphone, a $1,500 pocket knife along with $15,000 cash with the used personal violence against him. The unrepresented duo both pleaded not guilty to the charge.
Police Prosecutor Inspector Neville Jeffers strongly opposed bail based on the prevalence and nature of the charge. He also pointed out that violence was used in the commission of the crime and the duo reportedly admitted to the crime in a caution statement by the police.
The prosecutor noted that Harding currently has a summery matter before City Magistrate Leron Daly but is not attending court. The Chief Magistrate remanded the men until November 24 and transferred the matter to Night Court’s Magistrate Madan Kissoon.
In 2015, Harding was freed from an armed robbery charge before City Magistrate Judy Latchman after the prosecution failed to establish a prima facie case against him. He also has another robbery matter at the Providence Magistrates Court.
