ST STANISLAUS College and Graham’s Hall Primary School have emerged winners of the seventh annual Caribbean Statistics Day Inter-School Quiz Competition, held recently at CARIOM Secretariat in Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown.Four secondary schools and four primary schools were selected by the Ministry of Education to participate in the competition, and each school provided a team of four student representatives.
The quiz competition sought to stimulate interest in statistics among primary and secondary schools in Guyana. Most of the questions were based on statistics. The competing students were tested in areas of Mathematics and Statistics; work of the Regional Statistics Programme; awareness of current issues in Statistics, Mathematics, Technology and other related issues in the region, CARICOM said.
In the primary category, Graham’s Hall Primary of East Coast Demerara gained the top position, with St Gabriel’s Primary and Winfer Gardens Primary securing the first and second runner-up positions respectively.
In the secondary category, Saint Stanislaus College of Georgetown placed first, St Joseph’s High School second, and Bishop’s High School third.
Kishaun Singh of St Gabriel’s Primary won the prize for being the most outstanding primary school quizzer, while Ishwardat Boodramlall of Saint Stanislaus College secured the most outstanding quizzer prize for the senior competition.
Caribbean Statistics Day was commemorated on October 15 under the theme “Improving the lives of People – Advancing the Action Plan for Statistics in CARICOM”. Statistics Day events highlight the critical role statistics play in the daily decision-making of individuals, businesses and students.
