Clothes thief remanded

TWENTY-EIGHT-YEAR-OLD Ryan Edwards, a vagrant who stole clothes, was on Friday evening remanded to prison on two counts of simple larceny when he appeared before Georgetown Magistrate Beverly Bishop-Cheddi in a night court sitting. He pleaded guilty to the offence, which detailed that on October 10 at Fifth Street, Alberttown, Georgetown, he stole a quantity of clothes and a freezer valued at more than $75,000 from Andrew John Waddle.

He also confessed that on the same day and at the same location, he stole a quantity of clothes and clothes pins to a total value of $75,000 from Rashana Clark.

The Police Prosecutor, Inspector Shavon Jupiter, informed the court that on the day in question, the virtual complainants had left their clothes to dry on lines, but later observed that their clothes were missing. Waddle’s freezer was in his yard. The matter was reported to the police, and when checks were made around the Alberttown community, the defendant was observed carrying a large plastic bag.

Having stopped Edwards, the ranks searched the bag and found the stolen clothes inside. Edwards also admitted to stealing the clothes.

The tearful accused begged the magistrate to give him a second chance, and pleaded for something to eat, since he claimed he hadn’t eaten for the past three days.

The magistrate adjourned the matter for 15 minutes and requested that the accused be taken into the court’s prison holding area and fed. When the matter was recalled, it was time for Edwards to know his fate, but the prosecutor requested for some time to seek further advice on the matter.
Considering the prosecution’s request, the magistrate has adjourned the matter until Monday, October 17.
