THE NATIONAL Sports Commission (NSC) is heartened by the recent performances of Team Guyana at the recently concluded Central America and Caribbean (CAC) Body Building championships in the Dominican Republic.During a meet-and-greet yesterday at the Commission’s Homestretch Avenue office, the Director of Sport, Christopher Jones, commended the team’s performance, adding that more support will be forthcoming from the government.
Guyana Team of Mr Guyana Kerwin Clarke, Devon Davis, Bruce Whatley, Emmerson Campbell, Alisha Fortune and Franklin Brisport returned with five medals.
“Bodybuilding is noteworthy to mention because every time they participate at a regional or international event, they always return with awards. The NSC was only too proud to contribute to their travels because we knew that they would be representing the Golden Arrowhead to the best.”
President of the Guyana Body Building and Fitness Federation (GABBFF) Kevon Bess contended that they will continue in pursuit of greatness.
“It’s the fitting thing to have the athletes given the opportunity to represent Guyana at all costs and we hope that with this recent success and the success that we’ve been building on for the last couple of years that we can encourage more tangible support from the government going forward.
“The tally of medals this year is the highest since we’ve been participating in the CAC championships and the athletes have continued to show much progress and we hope going forward, we can have the athletes represent Guyana at more competitions. ‘
CAC Light Middleweight gold medallist Kerwin Clarke said, “I was elated by the performance at this year’s championship,” while Deron Davis, who obtained bronze in the Bantamweight category thought his experience was great.
Meanwhile, Men’s Physique silver medallist Campbell was thankful to his sponsors for the experience, saying, “This is the biggest CAC competition that ever was in the history of the 44-year competition and this is the biggest medal haul. It wasn’t a fluke or we gained walkovers, it was a great achievement and I hope we continue to get the support of corporate Guyana.”
Selvon Bruce Whatley picked up gold medal in the Masters Class before returning to take the silver medal in the Flyweight category.
Fortune narrowly missed out on a medal performance, having been entered in the wrong category, for which the organisers later apologised.
