A FIERCE battle will take place come Sunday when the Flying Stars Cycle Club runs off the 5th Annual Mohamed Kadir cycle road race with a first prize of one ounce of raw gold.Last year’s winner Raynauth Jeffrey representing Team Coco’s is expected to face the starter at 07:30hrs on Sunday on Homestretch Avenue. He is expected to get stiff competition from a host of other cyclists, even his own teammates.
Among the other cyclists who are expected to face the starter are Hamzah Eastman who is on a winning streak at the moment, Andrew Hicks who will be contesting both the senior and junior categories of the race, Guyana’s only professional cyclists Geron Williams, Raul Leal, Orville Hinds, Michael Anthony, Marlon `Fishy’ Williams, Shaquille Agard, Romello and Jevon Crawford and Jamal John.
With such a lucrative prize at stake for the winner, cycling enthusiasts and fans can anticipate a thrilling 80 miles of cycling all in one day.
Five categories – Seniors, Juniors, Veterans Under-45 years, Veterans Over-45 years and Juveniles – will be contested with the top six finishers in the senior category receiving prizes as will the top three finishers in the other categories.
After being sent on their way from Homestretch Avenue, the seniors, juniors and veterans Under-45 years will travel to Dora on the Linden/Soesdyke Highway before returning to the place of origin. The veterans Over-45 years as well as the juveniles will proceed to the hill just after Splashmin’s Fun Park, also on the Linden/Soesdyke Highway before returning to finish at Homestretch Avenue.
Eight prime prizes will be at stake and the respective winners of prizes will all be presented with their prizes immediately after the event.
Apart from Jeffrey, the defending champions of the other categories are: Andrew Hicks (junior), Horace Burrowes (veterans’ Under-45), Ian `Dumb Boy’ Jackson (veterans Over-45 and Deeraj Garbarran (juveniles).
