Den Amstel and Uitvlugt crowned champions

DEN Amstel Primary school and Uitvlugt Secondary school were yesterday crowned Champions of Region Three when the Primary and Secondary schools round-robin football tournament climaxed at the Den Amstel Community Centre ground, West Coast Demerara.Led by a hat-trick of goals from Captain Stellon Nelson, Den Amstel brushed aside Parfait Harmonie 4-0 in the final of the Primary division. Que Robinson netted the other goal to complete the rout in the one-sided affair.
In the 3rd place play-off in the Secondary division, Alex Edwards produced an extra time goal in the first period to give West Demerara victory over a stubborn Good Fortune unit by a 4-3 margin.
The sides were deadlocked at 3-all when the referee blew his whistle to signal the end of regulation time. Also on the score sheet for the winners were, Esan David, Gary Newlake and Denroy Duncan. For the losers, Steadroy Lee netted a double while there was one for Stephon Fraser.
The feature game of the afternoon resulted in triumph for Uitvlugt as they overcame Vreed-en-Hoop 3-1. Germaine Jacobs opened the scoring in the 20th minute to give Uitvlught a 1-0 lead at the break.After the resumption,Deon Prince made it 2-0 before Floyd Peters pulled one back for Vreed-en-Hoop. Daniel Floyd then regained the two goal cushion to ensure his side lifts the Secondary division Champion’s trophy.
Ten teams participated in each of the two divisions of competition which was sponsored by the Ministry of Social Protection and coordinated by Joel Gibson.(Ras Wadada)
