The Stabroek News of Thursday September 01, 2016, carried an article captioned ‘REO, APNU/AFC councillors walk out from Region Three meeting’. According to the reporter, the informant, Mr. Julius Faerber, the Regional Chairman of the region requested of the Regional Executive Officer, Mr. Denis Jaikarran, who was then operating as The Clerk of Council, an update on the status quo of the plantain chip factory at Wakenaam. The report further adds that the response given by the REO was done in a hostile manner and “that he had no report to give to anybody.”The inaccuracies and the erroneous statements issued by Mr. Faerber in this report leaves much to be desired from an individual who is considered as political head of this region. From the actions of the Regional Chairman, one can only surmise that this is a deliberate effort to stymie the work of the Regional Executive Officer and hinder the progress of the region under an APNU/AFC government.
Let me hasten to correct the false statements which were uttered by the chairman. Upon the request of chairman, the REO apprised the council of the pieces of correspondences which were sent to Honourable Dominic Gaskin, Minister of Business and the responses which had been forthcoming from the minister on the subject of the plantain chip factory and which were attached to the minutes of members on two previous meetings. To this response, the Regional Chairman in a loud, hostile and aggressive tone addressed the REO. It was at this point that the REO begged to be excused from the meeting. As the REO was leaving the meeting, the seven APNU/AFC councillors who were present left with him since the absence of the Clerk of Council means that there can be no meeting unless he appoints someone to act on his behalf. Even as the REO and councillors exited the board room, there were loud onslaught of disrespectful comments/statements hurled at them by the goodly Regional Chairman. Two PPP/C councillors also walked out and I am one of them.
The report also gave some other misleading information about the opening of schools and schools not being ready since the REO said that there was no money to clean. The hefty collaboration between REO and the Neighbourhood Democratic Councils throughout Region Three has resulted in the cleaning of most if not all school compounds within the region.
An apology is now being demanded from the REO but the inexcusable behaviour of the Regional Chairman is not without demerit and therefore should be taken into consideration if any apology is to be tendered.
