DILIGENT efforts by the police have led to the recapture of the second of three juveniles who escaped from the Sophia Juvenile Holding Centre at Sophia, Greater Georgetown at about 05:00hrs on Saturday. The trio had allegedly used parts from their steel bedframes to dig a hole in the lower flat of the holding centre; and thereafter they scaled the fence to make good their escape.

Police say the youth was recaptured while trying to return home at Tain Settlement, Corentyne, Berbice on Saturday at about 19:15hrs. Information received from the public was helpful in this respect.

The first escapee to be recaptured hails from Adventure, Essequibo Coast, but was recaptured at Rose Hall Town, Corentyne. He was on remand for a charge of robbery-under-arms. The second juvenile to be recaptured was on remand for simple larceny, and the third and as yet unrecaptured youth was on remand for break and enter and larceny.

The Guyana Chronicle reported that when a visit was made to the Juvenile Holding Centre at around 11:30hrs on Saturday, the facility had a heavy presence of police officers. Police have launched an investigation into the escape of the juveniles; and while no officer has been placed on close arrest, this newspaper understands that security personnel who were on duty at the time of the escape are being investigated, and the security system at the facility is being reviewed.
