TWENTY-six-year old Shameer Mohamed of Diamond was on Monday placed on $1million bail after he appeared before city magistrate Judy Latchman charged with causing death by dangerous driving.Mohamed denied the allegation which stated that on July 24, 2016 at Diamond Public Road he drove motor car PVV 2007 in a dangerous manner causing the death of Disc Jockey (DJ) Wavel “Bashment” Sabsook of 196 Samanta Point, Grove, East Bank Demerara.
He also denied the allegation which stated that on that said date and location, he drove a motor car under the influence of alcohol, with a blood alcohol level of .103 micrograms. He was placed on $10,000 bail for that charge.
His lawyer, Peter Hugh, told the court that his client was not at flight risk since he suffered burns about the body and he was unable to walk as result of the accident. Also Mohamed was not in possession of his travel document which were destroyed when the car caught afire after the accident.
Hugh added that Mohamed had to receive “dressing” for the Georgetown Public Hospital every Monday, Wednesday and Friday and the Prison services does not have the facilities to offer the sanitary care he needed to treat his burns.
The Police prosecution did not ask for bail, but requested that he report to the Golden Grove Police Station Tuesday or Thursday.
The matter was adjured until September 2.
It was reported by Guyana Chronicle that the 31-year-old Sabsook and his friend Mohamed who was driving at the time, were proceeding to Grove at about 03:00h on Sunday, July 24 when the vehicle in which they were travelling became uncontrollable and toppled several times before bursting into flames near the Distribution Services Limited (DSL) outlet at Diamond. Sabsook was flung from the vehicle and died on the spot.
