FOLLOWING the August 5, 2016 murder of Arnold Rattan, 47, of Sisters Village, West Bank Demerara at a wedding house, Solomon George was on Friday charged for the alleged murder.George, 37, a vendor of Lot 109 Murphy Street, Good Intent, West Bank Demerara, appeared before Magistrate Crystal Lambert at Vreed-en-Hoop Magistrates Court where he was not required to plead to the indictable charge.

George was remanded to prison until September 30, 2016, when he will make his second court appearance at the Wales Magistrates Court.

The father of two was allegedly knifed to death by a man in the chest during a wedding celebration at Long Pond Road, Sisters Village, West Bank Demerara.

At the time, Rattan was trying to escort his attacker out of his mother-in-law’s yard, because the man was misbehaving.

He had stepped over into the yard that was adjacent to the wedding house when Rattan decided to escort the man out of the yard and he was stabbed to the chest with a knife.

Residents made a citizen’s arrest of the assailant, after which he was handed over to the police and the murder weapon was retrieved by the lawmen and lodged as evidence in the matter.

The tractor operator, who works at Wales Sugar Estate, was rushed to the West Demerara Regional Hospital where he died while receiving treatment.

Police said the murder occurred at 23:55hrs on August 5 last after a drunken man refused to be evicted from a yard where he was not welcome.

A post-mortem revealed that Rattan died as a result of a punctured heart.
