Windwards close at 70 for four; Guyana bowled out for meagre 42

Frequent showers at the Park Hill Ground caused the players from Trinidad and Tobago and Windward Islands to remain in the pavilion until 15.30hrs, when play finally started on the first day of the second round match in the West Indies Cricket Board 2-innings competition yesterday. With only 30 overs bowled, Windwards, batting first, closed the day at 70 for 4 with their national Under-17 player Emmanuel Stewart not out on 34 runs while Deon Burton is also unbeaten on eleven.
Off-spinner Jonathan Bootan once again emerged as Trinidad and Tobago’s leading bowler, finishing with three of the four wickets to fall.
The QPCC player claimed Alick Athanaze, caught by Keagan Simmons for eight (6b, 1×4), Johan Jeremiah caught by Dejourn Charles for six (30balls, 1×4),and Windwards Under17 captain Johnel Eugene caught by Saiba Batoosingh for 1.
Fast bowler Jarlanie Seales (5-2-13-1) removed opener Anil Matthew who was caught by Jabari Mills, who made his debut in place of Brandon Maharaj.
Manager Kerwyn John revealed that their plan is to restrict Windwards to a small total and push for first innings points. He said: “we need to get Emmanuel Stewart early or keep him from scoring too much. Plus our bowlers have to work hard and get the other six wickets quickly so as to give the batsmen a chance to get first innings points and build a lead. We want to win to stay close to the top.”
In the other second round matches, defending champions Guyana were shockingly bowled out for a meagre 42 runs in 14.1 overs in their match against Leeward Islands, who has already secured first innings points and enjoy a sizeable lead at 126 for 5 after 46 overs, at the Arnos Vale Sports Complex ,while Barbados posted 149 in their first innings with Jamaica 40 for 2 in reply at the close of the first day’s play at Sion Hill playing field.
