No bail for cop on ‘ammo’ charge

A POLICE Constable was on Tuesday remanded to prison by City Magistrate, Leron Daily after being accused of having a quantity of odd rounds of ammunition in his cupboard. It is alleged that Jermaine Camel of 232 South Sophia, East Coast Demerara on June 24, at Eve Leary had the following ammunition in his possession: 23 x 9mm, 7 x .62, 7 .72 along with 3 x .78, while he was not the holder of a firearm licence.

Constable Camel denied the charge, while his lawyer Mr. Mark Conway pointed out that during the alleged ‘barrack room inspection’ his client was sent downstairs while the room was being searched. The lawyer stressed that several other officers had occupied the room so it is a case of multiple occupancy.

According to the prosecution facts, which was read by Corporal Bharat Mangru, during an inspection of the barrack room the defendant’s cupboard was searched and the ammunition was discovered.

Magistrate Daily refused the policeman bail and remanded him to prison until July 20.
