THE corpse burnt beyond recognition, which was discovered in the aftermath of a fire at Wales, West Bank Demerara last Thursday, is yet to be identified, even as a post-mortem is to be done on the body to determine the cause of death. In the wee hours of Thursday morning, that fire destroyed a building that had been unoccupied for a number of years: a two-storey wooden and concrete structure at Lot 1, Area “A” Goedverwagting, Wales, West Bank Demerara (WBD). Owner of the burnt building, Elizabeth Sattaur, has no idea who the dead person might be.

Fire Chief Marlon Gentle has noted that, based on investigations, the fire appears to have been an act of arson.

Police investigators say a woman is being sought for questioning in light of information surfacing that the caretaker of the property had hosted a gathering of a few female friends at the unoccupied house, during which there was an argument and one of her friends was injured, bringing the event to an abrupt end. Police are seeking to determine whether the corpse might be that of the injured friend.

Investigators have located the caretaker, but the whereabouts of this particular friend are yet to be ascertained.

Owner of the house, Elizabeth Sattaur, had reportedly learnt of the fire from a friend who called her at about 02:00 hrs to inform her of what had occurred. Sattaur said that when she arrived at the scene, the fire was almost extinguished; but at approximately 04:30 hrs, firefighters discovered the charred body in a stooping position in the bathroom area of a self-contained room in the lower flat of the building. Expressing shock, Sattaur said no one was supposed to be occupying the house.
