ROGER Federer beat Marcus Willis 6-0,, 6-3, 6-4 to progress to the third round of Wimbledon yesterday.Willis, who had to battle through six rounds of qualifying, stunned Lithuania’s Ricardas Berankis, ranked 718 places above him, on Monday
However, the Swiss eased to a first-set bagel in just 25 minutes as the gulf in class told.
The second set was a touch less one-sided with Willis taking three games, but, again, Federer’s superior class was the difference with the Swiss securing decisive break in sixth game of the second stanza.
However, Willis was growing into the occasion and managed to hold to love twice on his way to 4-4 in the third.
Yet, the Swiss upped it and secured a break in the penultimate game of the match before serving it out to secure his spot in the next round.
“It was very different. Marcus brought some unbelievable energy to the court with his play, the fans and his enthusiasm as well,” Federer said after the match.
The 25-year-old Briton, who was cheered on incessantly by much of Centre Court, hopes to kick on from here having previously contemplated quitting the game to tale up coaching.
“I need to keep my head down. I am disappointed to lose. I didn’t play as well as I could but I can hold my head high,” said the Brit.
“I have had a fantastic couple of weeks. I will keep going and do what I have been doing. There is life after Wimbledon and I want more experiences like this.
