Twenty – seven -year-old Orin Jules of 634 ‘D’ Field Sophia was remanded to prison on Tuesday by Magistrate Zamilla Ally-Seepaul for the murder of his younger brother.

Jules appeared at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s court and was not require to plead to the charge, which alleged that on June 18 at ‘D’ Field Sophia, he murdered 23-year-old Dexter Jules.

Jules, a construction worker, was unrepresented and appeared expressionless when he told the Magistrate that he was previously charged with other criminal offences, including break and enter and larceny.

However, Police Prosecutor David Goodridge told the court that the defendant has a history of threatening to kill his family members. Goodridge pointed out that Jules was recently convicted before the same court for threatening to murder his mother and his siblings.

The court heard that on June 18, the defendant and his younger brother were involved in a heated argument at their Sophia home when he picked up a knife and stabbed his brother several times in his chest. Dexter Jules was pronounced dead on arrival at the Georgetown Public Hospital.

Orin was apprehended by public spirited persons and was handed over to the police after they found him hiding in clump of bushes nearby. The Magistrate remanded him until August 04.

The Guyana Chronicle had earlier reported that Dexter Jules, who operated a shop when he was not mining in the interior, was conducting his day-to-day duties in his Sophia shop when his brother attempted to take something without asking.

“Orin de want something from de shop, but when Dexter stop he from coming in, he pull out a knife and stab him three times to his heart,” a relative had said.

Dexter leaves to mourn his six other siblings, wife and two children.
