272 pieces of cocaine admitted to evidence in Dataram trial

TWO boxes of cocaine, containing a total of 272 pieces of the illegal drug, were tendered into evidence Tuesday, in the ongoing trial of self-confessed drug trafficker Barry Dataram.Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) prosecutor Kunyo Sandyford-Thompson, in her appearance before City Magistrate Judy Latchman, made the submission for the boxes of cocaine pieces to be admitted as evidence in the trial of Dataram, his common-law wife Anjanie Boodnarine, together with Kevin Charran and Trevor Gouveia.

One of the boxes contained 92 cocaine pieces while another contained 180. These were tendered and marked as exhibits out of the 692 pieces which were submitted to the court as the trial continues.

It is alleged that on April 16, last, at 661 Fourth Avenue, Block X, Diamond, East Bank Demerara, 129.23 kilogrammes of cocaine were found on the premises when Dataram and the others were in the building. Hence they were charged with being in possession of the drugs for the purpose of trafficking.

The prosecutors’ witness – CANU Officer Andrew Yarde – along with the defendants, were allowed to examine and count the pieces before the items were admitted into evidence.

The defendants’ lawyer Glenn Hanoman was absent.

The trial was subsequently adjourned to June 27.
