Dear Editor,
LOCAL Government elections are to be held on March 18, 2016, and I urge all eligible Guyanese voters to go out and cast their votes. The state of affairs in our capital city is a horror story, and the administration that ran the affairs of the city for the past 20 years could be described as anything but good or competent.
Lack of change and renewal over a long period of time has caused some councillors and staff to believe that they have a divine right to be there. Both parties (PPP/C and PNC/R) are guilty of gross neglect and failure. So, finally, we, the citizens, have a duty to get rid of the old and put in its place young, energetic leaders. The time for young people to shine is now, and I urge voters to vote for a new, young team.
The campaign for LGE seems low-key and a lot of established parties’ candidates, who carry political baggage, are very quiet. Voters should take note of their silence. The clean-up campaign ongoing at present is the usual election time gimmick. The city having been neglected for over 30 years, and there being no planned programme of maintenance, it is only a matter of time before the rut steps in.
The City Constabulary runs its own show. It controls all the vending done on the sidewalk.
Regard I. Singh
