THE Georgetown City Council has joined forces with ‘Take Time Tuesday’, a non-governmental organization (NGO) formed by U.S. citizen Mitch Mitchell, to restore and preserve the environment along the seashore.Mayor and City Council Public Relations Officer (ag.) Debra Lewis said in a press release that the group was launched on Martín Luther King Day, which is observed annually on the third Monday of January. Volunteers from the U.S. Embassy and the Georgetown community have been working every Tuesday between 5 – 6pm to remove debris and litter from the seawalls area between Camp Street and the Pegasus International Hotel.

PART OF THE SOLUTION
Group leader Mitchell said when he came to Guyana he observed that the focus was on cleaning and restoring the environment. “Rather than complaining it is better to be a part of the solution,” Mitchell noted.

The Georgetown City Council supported the initiative by providing manpower and equipment to facilitate the exercise. Director of Solid Waste Management Walter Narine said that the department would continue to provide any necessary support.

“The Mayor and City Council applauds the move by this group. Council sees the initiative as one that is worthy of emulation by other citizens. Also the work done by the group coincides with the wider plan of the Georgetown Municipality to restore the environmental integrity of the capital city,” Lewis noted.

The Council had initiated the Green Georgetown Volunteer Corps with the main objective of the groups being to undertake several restorative projects in the city, which included tree planting exercises, cleaning of parks and recreational areas, community clean-up activities and promotion of environmental education.
