DESPITE early morning light shower, executives of the Regional Democratic Council (RDC) of Region Two (Pomeroon/Supenaam) and members of the disciplined forces congregated in the compound of the Anna Regina fire station to observe Guyana’s 46th Republic Anniversary. The event began at 08.00hrs.
In a message to a mammoth crowd of Essequibians from all walks of life, including students from the Anna Regina and Cotton Field Secondary schools, Regional Executive Officer Rupert Hopkinson emphasised the celebration of diversity and sovereignty, which happens to be the theme of the event.
“We have travelled a long way from the harsh, unlovely days of colonialism. We still have a long way to attain our goal. But we are marching there now,” he said.
The theme of the 46th anniversary of the Co-operative Republic of Guyana, Hopkinson stressed must be seen as a clear guide of how Guyana as a nation must proceed as it seeks to build a better life for all Guyanese.
“As your Regional Executive Officer, I endorsed this theme, not only for this year’s observances but for years to come; the citizens of this region must hold dear and be guided by the words of the theme in our daily lives.”
Hopkinson encouraged Essequibians to put aside petty differences and work to make Region Two a better place.
The hoisting of “our flag”, he said, signified that Guyana is a proud nation.
“Let us not be prisoners of history, let us not rehash a sordid past, but let us work together to create new and better possibilities, new and better opportunities, a new and better environment for this region, indeed our nation.”
Region Two chairman, Devenand Ramdatt also encouraged the attendees and Essequibians as a whole to be partners in development.
“We have the people; We have the resources; We have the will; We have the motive force; And we have the programme to enable us to continue our march towards the goal of Guyana,” he said. (Mohamed Khan).
