Khalil overcomes handicap to continue winning ways

Jason Ray Khalil overcame his minus 25 (-25) handicap to continue his winning ways when the Guyana Squash Association/Bounty Farm/ Digicel Annual Mashramani Squash tournament continued on Friday evening at the Georgetown Squash Courts.According to a release from the GSA,defending champion Khalil, playing in the open category, easily overcame his handicap in the first game against Brian Yong (+9), only conceding one point. However, he was made to fight harder in game two, losing just fivepoints. Final scores were 15 – 9, 15 – 13.
National champion Nyron Joseph (-20) defeated veteran player Dennis Dias (+10) in two close games. scores were 15 – 13, 15 – 14; while former national champion Regan Pollard (-14) disposed of Ryan Rahaman, only conceding a total of ten points,winning 15 – 10, 15 – 13. Raphael De Groot (-12) had two nail- bitters against Satesh Singh (+7), winning both games at sudden death 15 – 14, 15 – 14.
Leading the fight for the plus players who are still left in the tournament are Theron Mohabeer, Joe Mekdeci, Jonathan Hohenkirk and Taylor Fernandes. Joe Mekdeci (+4) easily defeated Lucozade handicap tournament winner Peter Michael De Groot (-10), 15 – 13, 15 – (-3); while Taylor Fernandes (+5) had to come from one game down before being victorious against fellow junior national player Alec Melville (-2), 12 – 15, 15 – 12, 15 – 9. Theron Mohabeer (+7) had an epic battle with national player Ashley De Groot (+3). After losing the first game 10 – 15, he was down match ball at 11 – 14, then staged a remarkable comeback to win the second game 15 – 14, and then the third game 15 – 8. Jonathan Hohenkirk (+7) defeated veteran player Henry Jeffrey (+10) 15 – 13, 15 – 10.
In Category’A’ Samuel Ince-Carvahal (-8) dropped the first game before storming back to dispose of Jason Gomes (+5) 14 – 15, 15 – 11, 15 – 9. Kirsten Gomes (+5) easily defeated Georgiana Fernandes (+8) 15 – 9, 15 – 5 while Madison Fernandes (+5) brushed aside Nathan Rahaman (+10) with the loss of only five points 15 – 7, 15 – 8.
