Causing-death driver on $400,000 bail

A TRUCK driver yesterday appeared in a city court charged with causing the death of 31-year-old Derika James of Dog Point, Bartica. James was killed in a road accident along First Avenue, Bartica, on Wednesday.Dale Edwards, 28, of 45 Sixth Avenue, Bartica and a driver at the Platinum Mining Company, denied the charge when he appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
It is alleged that on January 20, Edwards drove motor lorry GRR 7351 in a manner dangerous to the public, thereby causing the death of James.
Edwards’s lawyer, Mr. Peter Hugh, described the incident as an “unfortunate accident,” since according to an eye-witness the deceased had come into the path of the vehicle and attempted to run across the road.
Additionally, the attorney explained to the court that relatives of the dead man and his client had already arrived at a settlement,with Edwards also opting to pay the funeral expenses.

After there was no objection from the prosecution, the truck driver was granted $400,000 bail by the Chief Magistrate and the matter was transferred to the Bartica Magistrates Court for February 5
According to the police report, Williams was killed after she walked into the path of a moving truck while attempting to cross the road. The driver of the truck rushed the woman to the Bartica Hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
