Cuba fail to add to Caribbean sides at Centenario

Goals from four different scorers left Cuba without a place in the Copa America Centenario, with Panama now filling the final CONCACAF spot in the historic competition. The 100th staging of the Copa America, being held in the United States, will include Caribbean champions Jamaica, Haiti, who beat Trinidad and Tobago in a playoff game yesterday as well, the United States, Mexico, and Central American champions, Costa Rica.
It took just four minutes for Gabriel Gomez to put Cuba on the backfoot, and by the 18th minute things looked worse when Luis Tejada hit the back of the net with his penalty.
There was to be no further drama in the first half, but in the second, Panama were back at it again, Armando Cooper getting onto the scoresheet in the 52nd minute.
With the game almost complete, and Cuba resigned to defeat, Panama’s Blas Perez hit home an 89th minute goal to announce their arrival at the Copa America Centenario.
Panama were dominant in all areas of the park, holding 63 per cent of the possession and taking 15 shots to Cuba’s 10.
If there were any demerits for the Panamanians, it would have been that they were not clinical, with just five shots on target from the 15 they took. Cuba though, had just two.
