GCC, Blairmont clash for Roy Fredericks Cup on Sunday … Pavilion to be named in late batsman’s honour

IN WHAT is dubbed a Berbice versus Demerara showdown, Blairmont Cricket Club will face Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) tomorrow in a feature 50-over match for the first-ever Roy Fredericks Cup at the Blairmont Community Centre ground, West Bank Berbice. The match will get cracking at 09:30hrs, but prior to the bowl-off, management of the Blairmont Community Centre will unveil the name of a pavilion after Fredericks, the late great former Guyana and West Indies opening batsman.
Fredericks, a dashing left-hander, played for the Blairmont Cricket Club in his heyday, and current executive Shabeer Baksh said branding the pavilion after the batsman is a fitting way of paying tribute to his contribution to the game.
Baksh informed that the club has sought permission from the Berbice Cricket Board, which has control over cricket in the county, and the Guyana Sugar Corporation, which has authority over the ground, before naming the pavilion after Fredericks. Both entities approved the request.
When action gets underway on the field, Blairmont will depend on the likes of former Test fast bowler Brandon Bess, national Under-19 player Parmanand Ramdhan, Waqar Hassan, and leg-spinner Kevon Jawahir, who was outstanding in the Guyana Cricket Board’s Local Franchise League, to push their ambitions for victory.
GCC’s chances will rest on the shoulders of opener Jeetendra Sookdeo, left-arm spinners Raj Nanan and Anthony Adams, Devon Lord and Joshua Wade.
Admission to the venue is free and trophies for the game have been provided by Berbice Bridge Company Inc., Baksh Travel Service, Big B Restaurant and Greens Massive.
