TRAFFIC Tuesday afternoon ground to a halt for a prolonged period at the junction of Mandela Avenue and Ruimveldt Public Road, after several five gallon bottles of oil fell off the tray of a truck.

Instantly, there was a gush and dozens of bottles tumbled onto the roadway, posing a serious threat to pedestrians and motor vehicles plying the roadway. Several of the bottles exploded and the contents were emptied on the road. It was a miracle no one was hurt and that the bottles did not descend onto parked or passing motor vehicles.
The traffic police were called to the scene and assisted in restoring traffic control. Before long the traffic build up extended from outside DIDCO on Ramp Road to Meadow Bank, causing much time wasting and inconvenience. Eventually a container truck had to be contracted to pick up and transport the consignment to its destination.
