SO, I-News has new ownership — owner of Guyana Times, Dr Bobby Ramroop. The announcement, which was a surprise to even the staff at I-News, was clearly the topic of the day, with the public seeing this as a strategic move for Jagdeo (Bobby’s best friend) — as if having the Guyana Times on his side wasn’t enough. Soon both the Guyana Times and I-News will be slinging the same fallacies and misinterpretations, the public believes, and comments have been made by many that this is certainly a reason for them to unfollow the media entity on social media. The move even resulted in the laying off of some of its correspondents, and sparked the immediate resignation of its editor-in-chief. I don’t blame her. I would have run for the hills too.
Meanwhile, people are asking what’s happening with Robert Persaud. Why is he selling out all the things he owns these days? First was the radio station, now it’s I-News. He claims it’s the lack of ads, but others suspect that maybe he’s going somewhere… Let’s keep an eye out for more shady movements, shall we?
LET THERE BE LIGHT – ALWAYS!
GPL may have finally figured out how to ensure that people always pay their light bills on time. The utility company announced that soon, in addition to a reconnection fee and the outstanding bill amount, customers who have been disconnected will also have to pay a security deposit equal to six times their average monthly bill. The first question on people’s minds was: who in the world comes up with these things? I’m not sure about the logics of this new plan, but one thing is clear: either GPL plans on seeing half the country in darkness going forward -– since no one who gets disconnected will ever be able to get reconnected on those terms — or everyone will buck up and ensure that, whether they beg, borrow or steal, their electric bill will always be paid.
Last question, though: If we do buck up and are consistent in our payments, will this mean less blackouts? Doubtful!
DISCIPLINARY MATTERS, continued
Could it be that Clement Rohee’s word has finally borne some influence? The Guyana Police Force announced that the Police promotions have been suspended until February next year — a move that had been suggested by Rohee a few days past. This certainly puts a damper on the year-end festivities of the GPF, and the Commissioner of Police, Seelall Persaud, is none too pleased about it either. Persaud warned that such a move demoralizes the officers and takes the Force back to the place that Rohee had it – which, of course, was not a good place.
Rohee must be grinning wherever he is. For once, someone listened to him. I’m sure he awarded himself an A grade for it too.
