THE bus driver who, days ago, valiantly tried to save his passengers from being robbed despite being shot, died late Saturday at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).Dead is 38-year-old Jermaine Burrowes, of Lot 53 West Road Sparendaam, East Coast Demerara (ECD), who, last Tuesday around 22:00hrs prevented armed bandits from entering his bus and robbing his passengers by driving away.
The father of one, who was a minibus driver for over 15 years, leaves to mourn seven siblings and a community that saw him as a loving and exceptional human being.
A neighbour of his, Sukhai Singh, spoke glowingly of him, noting that he was never a talkative person, but a cool and easy-going man.
“Jermaine was an angel; he was very kind. He was always a good boy; not like others,” the 74-year-old said.
“I watch him grow up,” she said. “I know his father and family. He was such a decent young man. It’s very sad, imagine I can’t even eat, it bothers me.”
Other members of the village supported what Singh said; they all agreed that Burrowes was not only likeable, but a very special person.
One of his sisters, Abeana Bagot, described him as hardworking and full of potential, noting that family members are totally amazed that he should meet such a cruel end.
“He was driving that bus and tried saving everybody from being robbed; that was the type of person he was. Now he is no more,” Abeana said.
Barrowes was shot during an attempted robbery on a minibus he was driving along the Liliendaal Railway Embankment on December 14. The bus was on its way to Georgetown when the incident occurred.
He was shot in the abdomen shortly after picking up passengers at the Giftland Mall at Liliendaal, ECD.
Reports are that even though he was bleeding profusely, Barrowes yet managed to drive his vehicle for a short distance before veering into a trench at Blygezeight Gardens, ECD.
He was subsequently rushed to the GPHC where he underwent emergency surgery.
Police are continuing investigations with the aim of apprehending the bandits who killed Barrowes.
