FYF, Essequibo steals the spotlight as
GBA wraps up 2015 calendar of events
—FYF named top gym

THE Forgotten Youth Foundation (FYFD)and Essequibo (Esse) Boxing Gyms stole the spotlight when the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) staged its final card for 2015 at the Andrew `Six Head’ Lewis Boxing Gym, Calendar Street and Independence Boulevard yesterday with a Under-16 competition.The event, which was sponsored by Demerara Distillers Limited under its Pepsi Brand in honour of Guyana’s only Olympic medalist Michael Parris, saw the FYF gym winning five of the 11 titles that were up for the taking as well as two second-place finishes, and was named the Best Gym, while Essequibo won four titles and finished with three runners-up places.
The Harpy Eagles’ Gym (HE) won one title and placed second in three other weight divisions.
The Carryl Boxing Gym (CB) of Linden won one title and was runner-up in another weight division.
The Pocket Rocket (PR) Boxing Gym of Linden had to settle for two runners-up spots on the podium.
Winning gold for FYF was Jamie Kellman who forced the referee to stop his 60-64 pounds weight category bout against his gym mate Seon Graham at 40 seconds of the third round; Travis Inverman who caused the referee to stop his 70-74 pounds division fight against Akeem Ali at eight seconds of the second round; Orin Harris who secured a points decision over HE’s Joseph Semple; Shakien Jones who won via the Technical Knock-Out at 38 seconds of the third round in his bout against Deandra Lynton in the 90-94 pounds weight division, and Shamer Bumbury who in his 120-124 pounds division caused the referee to stop the contest against Joel Alicock (PR) at 43 seconds of the second round.
Essequibo’s victories came from Shaquile Wright in his 120-124 pounds weight division against Carryl’s Boxing Gym’s Mohammed Bacchus; Christopher Moore who defeated his gym mate Deshan Elcock on points in their 125-132 weight class; Quancy Wright who also defeated his gym mate Deron Williams in the 65-69 pounds weight division, and Delroy Elcock who scored a second round TKO (Medical) win against his gym mate Junior Hyman in their 95-99 pounds division final.
Both Williams and Hyman fought earlier in the day with Williams advancing to the final with a second round TKO win against FYF’s Dwayne Baptist and Hyman recording a split decision victory over PR’s Omar Pollard.
Carryl’s Boxing Gym secured gold in the 140-147 weight category through Joshua Corbin who beat FYF’s Brian Darris on points.
HE’s gold came from Kevon Mullings who defeated Herman Whyte on points in their 90-94 pounds weight group contest.
