A new executive has been installed to manage the Corentyne Water User’s Association, Gobin Harbhajan, Special Assistant to Prime Minister, Moses Nagamootoo in Berbice has said. According to Harbhajan as the Prime Minister’s Special Assistant and a RDC Councilor of Region 6 he had pushed for a new management for the association. “I have successfully gotten the Minister of Agriculture, Noel Holder and other interested officials involved.”
Harbhajan said elections for the N0 52-74 (WUA ) was held and S. Naidu was appointed as Chairman. The other executive members include: A. Rajab (Vice Chairman), K. Persaud (Secretary), T.P. Ramnauth (Treasurer) and three executive members L. Ramnarine, R. Parasram & R. Harsarack.
Besides, Harbhajan said a few weeks ago a new chairman and board members were elected at the Crabwood Creek WUA. Harbhajan stated that the Water User’s Associations across the region had been in a “total mess” and was mired in corruption”. He charged that the life of many of the associations had expired and the previous government had turned a blind eye, noting that the last WUA election was held since 2010 where most members were handpicked and politically-appointed. Harbhajan said with this new election process “I have advocated that each village should appoint a representative to be part of the Community.” He said too that he stressed that the New Chairman work in the best interest of the farmers.
