Red Force, Windward Islands Volcanoes play to tame draw

TRINIDAD and Tobago Red Force and the Windward Islands Volcanoes played to a tame draw when their West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) regional four-day encounter ended at the Beausejour Cricket Ground, Gros-Islet, St Lucia yesterday.Facing a deficit of 76, after resuming at their overnight two without loss, the Volcanoes opted to bat the entire day, ending on 198 for eight when stumps were drawn.
Final scores were: Windward Islands Volcanoes 306 and 198; T&T Red Force 382.
The Volcanoes suffered an early setback, losing the wicket of opener Tyron Theophile (one), caught by Yannick Cariah, with just seven runs on the board and also while Miles Bascombe (21) and Johnson Charles (seven) before they had cleared the deficit.
Opener Devon Smith, with a solid knock of 56, which included three fours in 215 minutes, however steadied the middle-order, keeping the mainly spin attack at bay.
When Smith departed at 149 for six, T&T Red Force’s hopes of forcing an outright win grew but determined knocks by Shane Shillignford (34) Andre Fletcher (29) and Kevin McLean (24) thwarted their efforts.
There were two wickets each for Marlon Richards, Narsingh Deonarine, Imran Khan and Akeil Hosein for 17, 27, 38 and 82 runs respectively.
T&T Red Force’s Yannick Ottley was adjudged man-of-the-match for his unbeaten 99 in his team’s second innings.
T&T Red Force will oppose leaders Guyana Jaguars at the Guyana National Stadium while Windward Islands Volcanoes battle Barbados Pride at the Kensington Oval, Barbados from February 12, 201s next when the tournament resumes.
