Guyana’s national Team which recently returned from the United Sates Open Team Table Tennis Championships in Maryland exceeded their prescribed goals according to president of the Guyana Table Tennis Association Godfrey Munroe.Speaking during a brief appreciation ceremony on Saturday at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, Munroe noted, “I think we surpassed the goals that we had set which we had set, which were developmental, I think we have exceeded that.”
“That resulted in three of our teams retaining gold in categories that I would say very good and against competitive teams in the region,” continued Munroe.
The team of Shemar Britton and Nigel bray, Miguel wong and Raynor Anderson, and Britton and Alec Hopkinson each picked up gold.
Munroe added that because of the structure, the GTTA has been able to achieve counted successes and admitted that there have been periods where the body did not do as well as forecasted.
Nonetheless, they have been able to ensure that their nucleus remains intact through programs and tournaments.
Meanwhile, coach Idi Lewis congratulated the unit on their performance as a whole as they displayed both professionalism and sportsmanship.
“This is the best tournament in the world for exposure. It’s the only tournament that you can actually play all these different styles in one weekend. There Is no other tournament in the world where you can play these kind of matches where you can play the Chinese, the pen holder style ect.,” continued Lewis.
The tournament featured action from November 26 to 30 at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Centre in Maryland, USA,
The team represented the nucleus of Guyana’s table tennis talents and the next generation of future champions with players straddling from eight-years to the senior levels.
Other team members included Team Guyana featured Tyriq Saunders, Neveak Clarkston, Thuraia Thomas, Aneka Philips, Delecia Cummings, Yuedistir Persaud, Navindra Persaud, Niron Bissu, Krystan Sahadeo, Colin Wong, Joel Alleyne, Nicholas Roamin, Brandon Jaikarran, Orlando Mc Ewen, Raynor Anderson, Jamal Nicholas, Isaiah Layne and Priscilla Greaves.
