WITH the rising of the sun, officers and ranks from various units of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) marched through some city streets to the Square of the Revolution in a ceremony to mark the Army’s 50th anniversary.President Brigadier David Granger, who received the salute during the route march, was joined by Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo and Chief of Staff of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF), Brigadier Mark Phillips.
After taking off from Base Camp Ayanganna, the ranks took a circular route through Georgetown, marching along Durban Street and into Cemetery Road before giving the salute at the Square of the Revolution.
Also joining the party at the Square of the Revolution were Minister of State, Joseph Harmon, and Minister of Legal Affairs, Basil Williams.
This Saturday morning activity was one of several planned to celebrate the army’s 50th anniversary. Other events planned are: the Military Command competition, slated for November 27 at Base Camp Stephenson; a Veteran’s Day event on November 20 at Base Camp Ayanganna; and a grand military Tattoo Display on November 21 at Camp Ayanganna.
Celebrations began with a church service on November 1. At that time, President Granger announced that November 1 would be celebrated every year as “Defence Force Day.”
