CLIVE ‘The Punisher’ Atwell is very confident of lifting the Central American Boxing Federation’s (CABF) super lightweight title when he squares off with Dexter Gonsalves in the feature bout of the Guyana Boxing Board of Control/Guyana Boxing Association Pro-Am Card this evening, at the Giftland OficeMax Mall, Liliendaal, East Coast Demerara.Atwell, who is based in Dominica, but who benefited from a training stint in New York recently told Chronicle Sport that he is confident of defeating Gonsalves who, according to Atwell, has been involved in the sport longer than he.
Atwell is replacing Trinidad-based Guyanese Iwan Azore on the card in the main 12-round title bout.
Atwell’s professional record stands at 13 wins, two losses and one draw from 16 professional fights while Gonsalves’ record is seven wins, one loss and two draws from 10 bouts.
“When I come, I come in full strength, whether at short notice or no notice, because I feel this is what I do and I’ve learnt to put myself in shape,” Atwell disclosed to Chronicle Sport.
He said his stint in the United States was a tough one, but the lessons learnt there were invaluable and come tonight, it’s going to be “just another day at the office.”
He said he came into the sport and met Gonsalves, but the level he (Atwell) is at right now far exceeds the level of Gonsalves.
Apart from the Atwell versus Gonsalves affair, the night will also see debutant Imran Khan in his professional debut against David Thomas.
Khan boasts a very impressive amateur record of 102 victories and 22 losses from his 124 fights, while Thomas, who to date has fought only four professional fights, has lost all of them, so this will be a bruising affair.
The opening bout on the night’s card brings together Terrence Adams against Keeve Allicock in a four-round featherweight contest.
Adams will be making his debut as a professional after winning 30 amateur bouts and losing four. Allicock, on the other hand, fought one professional fight and lost it.
Anson Green with two wins and three losses in his professional career will face Quincy Gomes, who has fought five professional fights, winning three of them and losing two in a six-round junior welterweight affair.
