Slingerz Football Club walked away as 1–0 winners over Fruta Conquerors, while Alpha United and Monedderlust played to an entertaining 1–1 draw when action in the STAG Elite League continued last Saturday night at the #5 Ground, West Coast Berbice.

The usual huge crowd was on hand at the West Coast Berbice facility to cheer their side on, and who are now undefeated at home; the only team in the league with such distinction.

Alpha United would get the go-ahead just six minutes into the contest when Delon Lanferman scored from point-blank range to give the city side a 1–0 lead.

Lanferman’s goal – the fifth so far in the league – stunned the huge crowd on hand but knowing that their team holds an impressive home record, the fans were not too bothered by Alpha United’s goal.

Kevin Cottoy, the diminutive Monedderlust forward, was a thorn in the sides of Alpha United’s defenders, who had difficulties keeping up with his speed and agility on the pitch.

However, Cottoy was lacking help on top, and on the other end, Monedderlust’s custodian was forced to pull off several critical saves with Lanferman, on several occasions, getting his way with the defence and, along with captain Daniel Wilson, Coach Wayne Dover’s was enjoying a good night.

Things took a turn when Alpha United’s Quincy Madramootoo slipped in the defence which allowed Monedderlust to press forward and to get a shot off on goal which Alpha United’s goalkeeper spilled and the ball landed in the path of Seon Jackman who made no mistake in hammering in the equaliser in the 35th minute.

The crowd erupted and immediately the momentum shifted in the game and the hunted became the hunters.

The half ended and it was clear that both sides were not playing for a draw and an exciting second half was on the horizon.

Alpha United, searching for another goal, brought in Grenadian striker Kithson Bain into the game and immediately things returned in favour of Dover’s side since the Berbicians fell deep into their half.

Bain made an immediate impact on the game and while missing a few clear goal chances, created a few for his teammates.

Wilson, Dwayne Lawrence and Lanferman were all guilty of not putting away their easy goal scoring chances and Monedderlust held on for an important draw.

The night’s opening game saw Slingerz FC reshuffling their roster following their on-going eligibility issue with the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) which is yet to be resolved.

Coach Joseph ‘Bill’ Wilson was without his St Vincent and the Grenadines imports (Winslow McDowall, Jolanshoy McDowall and Keith James), and former Morvant Caledonia United striker Domini Garnett; all important pieces.

But it was hard to tell that the Vergenoegen club was without some of their main players since the club, for much part of the game, had the upper hand.

Fruta Conquerors led by captain Trevon Lythcott, Eon Alleyne, Kwamie LaFleur and Jermaine Junor faced one of the league favourites that had Vurlon Mills, Tichard Joseph, Colin Nelson, Dwain Jacobs and King Solomon Austin leading their charges.

Both teams created their fair share of chances in the first half, but it didn’t result in goals, and heading into the second half goalless, Fruta Conquerors conceded a penalty after a handball was called in the 58th minute.

Joseph was tasked to take the kick and he buried it high and hard; way out of reach for the Fruta Conquerors’ goalkeeper.

It was Fruta Conquerors’ third defeat in the STAG Elite League while Slingerz FC picked up their third win to remain undefeated.
