City steps up efforts to address proper garbage disposal

THE Mayor and City Council of Georgetown in its commitment to create a “green city,” has re-launched an initiative aimed at ensuring that businesses in the city dispose of garbage in the correct manner.Public Relations Officer Debra Lewis said the city has recommenced its inspection of refuse and receptacles, in and around the city.
Lewis said that campaigns, which have thus far been completed in and around the Lacytown area, were all aimed at making sure waste receptacles used by businesses were in keeping with the Mayor and City Council’s requirement.
According to Lewis, this particular exercise was done through the collaboration of three departments of the city: Public Relations, Environmental Sanitation, and Solid Waste Management departments.
“We checked to see that the receptacles were adequate, and where they were deemed to be inadequate, we served notices,” she said of the exercise. She added that where the receptacles were inadequate, the businesses were given 14 days to acquire the requisite containers and have them on their premises.
Lewis noted that even some small receptacles were deemed as garbage, especially when found in the city’s alleys, drains and canals.
Also, as part of addressing litter and indiscriminate dumping in the city, the council has also started the Anti-Litter Unit. Lewis noted that this unit continues to patrol the streets of Georgetown to help bring an end to littering.
Thus far, this unit has arrested and charged 25 persons for littering, Lewis advised. She explained that these persons were caught in the act on some of the popular streets: South Road, Brickdam; Regent, Water, Cornhill, Robb and Croal streets.
