Woman remanded for ganja possession

A 38-YEAR-old cook was yesterday remanded to prison by City Magistrate Ann McLennan after pleading not guilty to a narcotic charge at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.Onkia Williams of Lot 2518 Layau Street, North Ruimveldt was before the court on the charge which alleges that on October 13 at Sulfur Road Backdam, Cuyuni River, she had 58 grams of cannabis in her possession for the purpose of trafficking.
Williams’ lawyer, Mr. Clyde Forde, in his application for reasonable bail, explained that his client worked as a cook attached to a mining camp. When the police conducted a search there the alleged drug was not found in the possession of Williams.

However, according to Police Prosecutor Deniro Jones, the accused operated a shop in the interior which, on the day in question, was searched by police ranks on patrol. He further explained that the accused was busted with the drug which was concealed in a scotch-taped parcel in her netting. The parcel consisted of leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be cannabis and later confirmed to be the illicit substance.
Williams will make her next court appearance on October 28 at the Bartica Magistrate’s Court.
