dangerous to the public thereby causing the death of Leon Hunte, a 55-year-old handyman attached to the Georgetown Mayor and City Council (M&CC).
The matter, heard in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts, was prosecuted by Inspector Vishnu Hunt who told the court that, on September 10, 2014 about 11:115 PM, Persaud was driving east along Lamaha Street at a fast rate of speed when he collided with Hunte who was riding a pedal cycle in the same direction. Hunte was pitched some distance away.
Magistrate Judy Latchman, in delivering her sentence, referred to the fact that a life was lost, and reminded the defendant of the number of road fatalities for the year 2015.
She told the businessman that it was his responsibility and duty as a road user to promote road safety, and to preserve and value our human resources. In accordance to her ruling, she sentenced him to 58 months in prison. The defence Attorney has since appealed the matter and made application for bail pending application. However, bail was denied.
