TOWN Clerk Royston King has sounded a warning to drainage workers that “slackers will not be allowed to ride the system.”The town clerk was addressing staffers at an early breakfast meeting on Wednesday at Sleepin Hotel on Brickdam, where he focused on employees who are assigned to desilt and clean street drains, alleyway drains and canals.

He said the Council is working assiduously to restore the integrity of the drainage system in Georgetown, which requires hard work and the cooperation of employees and citizens as well.

The town clerk noted that drainage workers are important in the restoration process and they have a responsibility to be punctual, dedicated and committed to this cause.

Previously, he observed, an attitude of irresponsibility had developed among many employees of the City Council because they felt neglected and did not have adequate tools and protective clothing.

However, employees are now being equipped with the requisite tools to get the work done and so the callous attitude towards work must be reversed.

The town clerk said that since each worker in the drainage section has a critical role to play in the restoration of the drainage system, it is time for employees to move away from mediocrity and embrace a spirit of excellence. He also reiterated that the Council has a responsibility to provide an excellent service to the valued ratepayers.

And calling for a change in the work attitude, King warned that “persons who are non-compliant would not be allowed in the system. The system has no room for lazy people; therefore, employees must come to work with an attitude to work.”
