MRS Priya Narine’s red KIA vehicle received the brunt of the impact of a collision with a police pickup yesterday afternoon at the intersection of Mandela Avenue and Norton Street in Georgetown, and it ended up in a small drain. After substantial efforts had been expended, the vehicle was eventually removed from the drain and placed in a truck to be transported to the East La Penitence Police Station.
At the accident scene yesterday, her husband, Ramroop Narine, told this newspaper that his wife was driving south along Mandela Avenue, and was in the process of turning west into Norton Street when the police pickup came from behind on her right hand side and slammed her vehicle into the drain.
He said the injuries Mrs. Narine had sustained to her head rendered her unconscious. She was, however, taken to hospital, where her condition is being monitored.
Eyewitnesses concurred that police vehicle, PTT 5967, was speeding when it hit the other vehicle head-on and caused it to careen into the roadside drain. They added that the impact of the collision caused the female driver to lose consciousness, and she was transported to the hospital; after a few minutes, the police vehicle reportedly drove away from the scene and was observed parked at the East La Penitence Police Station.
The police pickup did not sustain extensive damage, but the KIA vehicle was smashed on the right side, and its window was shattered.
The police have refused to comment on the accident.
