PRESIDENT David Granger yesterday handed over a laptop, complete with a printer, headphones, a DVD writer and a flash drive, to Ceion Rollox, an 18-year old, visually impaired first-year student of the University of Guyana. According to a Ministry of the Presidency release, Rollox, who resides at Sophia, lost his sight at the age of 14. However, this did not prevent him from achieving academic success at the Caribbean Secondary Examination Certificate (CSEC) exams, through the Guyana Institute for the Blind.
He wrote to President Granger seeking assistance to acquire a laptop which would enable him to use a special software with speech synthesisers as he pursues a Degree in Communication Studies.
The President, while handing over the items, said that as a matter of policy, he is committed to supporting all forms of education. He said, “We do not regard the loss of sight as an impediment but as an opportunity for you to fulfil your educational objectives by different means.”
