Gold Cup … Jamaica poised for football history

THE Caribbean Island of Jamaica is preparing to enter the history books once more when they take on hemispheric giant Mexico in the finals of the 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania tonight.

A win for the fearless Jamaicans in the Grand Finale will make them the first Caribbean team to have captured the prestigious Gold Cup title.
Already, they have rewritten the history books by becoming first Caribbean side to reach the final and only the second Caribbean side to win a road game against the U.S.
Haiti was the first in a 1-0 win in San Diego, California, in 1969.
“I am very proud of my team. What we were doing from the first minute to the last minute was over the limit,” declared Jamaica’s head coach Winfried Schafer.
“I am very happy. We are not finished. We cannot make a party now. We have one match more.”
That final game is set for the Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia on Sunday against Mexico, which defeated Panama 2-1 in extra time to advance.
The Reggae Boyz made an impressive run through the preliminary phase of the tournament before posting a stunning 2-1 semi-final win over defending champions USA.
“Back in Jamaica right now there’s got to be a party somewhere,” said attacker Giles Barnes, whose 18-yard free kick lifted the Boyz to a 2-0 halftime lead over the defending champion.
“It will even be greater when we lift the cup in the final as well.”
Mexico have stood in the way of Jamaica securing a birth in the CONCACAF finals on two occasions.
On both previous occasions – in 1993 and 1998 – they were beaten by Mexico and missed out on the final.
“I know what we have to do, but I want the players to think about the match, not only the coach. I can tell the players ‘go left, go right’, but the players have to think also,” said Schafer.
Kick-off time is 7.30 PM (6.30 Jamaica time)
