BY the time you read this letter there would have been the installation of a new President of the Republic of Guyana. That president would be none other than ex-army Brigadier David Granger. He would have acceded to power based on the punishing system of rigging that gave himself and party success and brought him to the high office of the land.
Former president Donald Ramotar would not concede defeat and has asked for a recount, because he has firm evidence that the will of the people was stolen and that he was not defeated rather he was cheated out of office.
Nevertheless, this is what will take place: to appease Ramotar, GECOM would carry out a sham of a recount and still declare Granger the winner. They are going to say that they’ve recounted the ballots (this is a lie, they would have recounted the fake SOPs) and found negligible discrepancies but in it all, the coalition won the elections. So, whether Ramotar concedes defeat or not that is irrelevant to the issue. The APNU+AFC coalition would be declared winners of the electoral process 2015.
As you can well see, there is no violence, no looting or burning or anything untoward, as the president in waiting he would have played his cards well. He has won the hearts of local and foreign interests, he has kept the peace. No one can deny this ‘good’ quality of the man, so swear him in.
Now, let me paint a canvas for you, let me give you a glimpse of the future. The scenario from now onwards is President Granger; he is going to take full control of the reins of power. Being the military man he is, there would be no appeal to the courts for a recount. And that is, “if ever” this matter is entertained in a court of law the justice presiding would have to be circumspect in his/her deliberations.
Like a cat on a hot tin roof, that justice would have to be extremely careful. The point is, the PNC/APNU has an onerous history when dealing with a free judiciary, so be it known this is the last we can and will hear of a recount; it is a done deal.
The way forward from this point on is a total lock-down, may I repeat, a total lock-down on everything legitimate as Granger flexes his power muscle.
And just food for thought, this might very well be my last article in the Guyana Chronicle as dissenting voices – press or public – would be denied access through a government-funded media.
