Grove resident remanded on firearm, ‘ammo’ charge

THIRTY-five-year-old Adrian Adonis, of Lot 491 Grove Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara, appeared Wednesday before City Magistrate Fabayo Azore, charged with unlawful possession of firearm and ammunition.He pleaded not guilty to both charges, one of which detailed that on Monday, April 6, at Campbellville Housing Scheme in Georgetown, he had in his possession one 9mm pistol when he was not the holder of a firearm licence.

Particulars of the other charge detail that on the same day, at Campbellville Housing Scheme, he had in his possession 5 live rounds of matching ammunition without being the holder of a firearm licence.

Police Prosecutor Simone Payne, told the court that, on the day in question, police were on patrol duty when they saw the defendant with a gun in his hand. The ranks gave chase and caught Adonis with the weapon.

The unrepresented man was denied a pretrial liberty after the prosecutor cited the seriousness and prevalence of the offence.

He was remanded to prison, and will make his next court appearance before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry on April 13.
